The Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) is an autonomous region in the east of Tajikistan. Located in the Pamir Mountains, it makes up 45% of the land area of the country. The Pamir Highway (M41) goes through the area, so if you are travelling to Tajikistan there is a good chance you'll be passing through this region!

To visit GBAO you will need a special permit referred to as a 'GBAO permit'.

This permit can be applied for at the same time as the visa and is issued along with the visa if requested (although at an additional cost). It will be valid for the same dates as the visa.

If you're getting an eVisa, it will appear in large red text on the left hand side of your visa grant letter.

If you're getting a sticker visa, the permit will be a large blue rectangular stamp placed next to the visa in your passport. Please allow an additional page for the stamp, and make sure that it is there when you check your visas.
